Inaugural blog on wellness
From: Sau Lan Staats, PhD, Founder, SimBalance, Inc.
Welcome to the inaugural blog for simple, balanced, and healthy living! Our intent is to post mostly original insights on BPPV and other topics related to aging. So subscribe to this site to receive alerts when a new post is published.
Sixteen years ago, I invented the SimBalance System for use nightly to mitigate BPPV symptoms. Since then, the misery of suffering from BPPV has become a thing of the past for me. I am now so adept at stacking ordinary pillows to lift my head up during sleep that I no longer need to carry the system around when traveling. Once in a while, when extra pillows were not available, I had to resort to sleeping on a stack of clothes from my suitcase, an air plane neck rest support, or even some folded piece of plastic. They were far from comfortable, but as long as they accomplished the job of tilting my head at an angle during sleep, I endured. Just the thought of another debilitating episode of BPPV still terrifies me.
Through the years, I have also found that being adequately hydrated is crucial to fending off BPPV symptoms. While I do not have a scientifically verifiable explanation for this observation, anecdotally, many of us have experienced a sudden attack of dizziness while, or shortly after, drinking a cup of strong coffee, a known diuretic. Also, if you take a glance at our scientific poster here, it is not far-fetched to surmise that sufficient hydration of the body should prevent the jelly-like film carrying the otoliths from drying up and letting loose those little ‘ear rocks’ to go where they do not belong. To me, making sure that I am adequately hydrated sounds reasonable and is easy enough to do that I do not need to know the exact mechanism or relationship between being hydrated and BPPV symptom reduction. Someday, with the help of artificial intelligence, perhaps, we will get the answers to these complicated questions.
Having a dizziness-free life is priceless. Alas, as we age, other age-related problems raise their ugly heads to make our lives less than perfect. In the past few years, I have made some discoveries and found some simple supplementation to reduce the pain and suffering caused by these symptoms that can be every bit as debilitating as BPPV but not necessarily so benign. I am excited by these findings, and to be honest, they are the driving force for my starting the blog.
I do not mean to stop here to create suspense. Rather, I want to gauge your interest.
